Early on in the pandemic, the hospital I was staff at had limited supply of MAXAIR CAPR that they reserved for people who truly failed N95 fit tests. So, I had to shave and wear an N95 most of the time and I sooo missed my beard but especially my CAPR.
In November 2020, I ended up getting Covid and dealt with post infection respiratory and cardiac issues for a while, which made wearing an N95 super difficult. The CAPR became my saving grace then because I was able to provide care to my patients while wearing the CAPR and be able to breathe easier while still being protected. I also like that my patients are able to actually see my face and my expressions compared to being hidden behind a mask. This is especially critical when I have to be the bearer of bad news or have important conversations about goals of care with patients and their families. I could not imagine having emotional conversations with someone whose face is hidden behind a mask and how hard that would be. While I would love to live in a world where I only had to use CAPRs once or twice a year, I fully understand that will not be the case for a long time and I am forever grateful to have access to high quality protective gear like the MAXAIR CAPR.Before I received my MAXAIR CAPR, I was in fear of exposure to the COVID-19 virus, and risking my life, every moment I was working at the medical center. Initially, we did not have an adequate supply of N95 masks.
We were also wearing goggles and face shields. When we obtained N95s, they were hot and smothering, and a perfect, safe fit throughout an 8—12 hour shift was not guaranteed. Also, we had to resort to sending them to reprocessing for sanitation, and their return was hit and miss. The MAXAIR CAPR was, and continues to be, a godsend. It filters 99.97%, without the need for another smothering mask. It has delivered cool, filtered air at variable speeds for entire 8 hour shifts. It is not loud or heavy. The medical center I work at had, at one time, the most COVID-19 patients in the state. I was deployed from the Operating Room to the ICU, DOU and patient floors into rooms that sometimes had three COVID-19 positive patients/room. I was much more comfortable, and much less anxious, wearing my MAXAIR CAPR, and have stayed healthy since the initial surge in COVID-19 cases. I highly recommend this product for personal safety, comfort and peace of mind.My name is Alex and I am an ICU nurse. I used the MAXAIR PAPR for roughly about a year while caring for the massive influx of COVID-19 patients. It was an absolute life saver!!
It kept you cool and your face was free of a mask! Especially in the ICU, you could be gowned up, all while getting hot and sweaty from the plastic gowns, for hours on end trying to keep the patient alive. I will say that sometimes it got heavy on my head but I would MUCH rather wear it for 12 hours than a mask, my face was always so itchy!
Another bonus was that patients, for the first time in a long time, could actually see my face. They could see when I smiled. They could see when I cheered them on as they got better. And they could see me when I sat with them while they took their last breath. I was no longer just a masked up, faceless being but a woman who wanted the best for my patients. Faces (and expressions) are so important in life and masks took that away from us. But the PAPR restored humanity. It restored the way we, as nurses, cared for our patients. It restored everything that the masks took.
